Van Edwards’ claim: charisma isn’t charm you either have or
don’t — it’s a legible, learnable balance of two signals, sent and read in
seconds.
Published in 2022, Cues is the research trade book from Van
Edwards’ Science of People lab, built on studies of body language, vocal
tone, and facial micro-expressions across thousands of interactions —
on video, in person, and on stage. Her framework: people read every
social signal along two axes, warmth (“do you care about me?”) and
competence (“can you help me?”), and the strongest, most trusted
impressions balance both.
The book’s most useful, most concrete finding for a conversation
product is what she calls “conversation sparks” — specific, novel,
slightly unexpected questions that measurably beat generic small talk
at producing real disclosure, laughter, and connection.
