Can we feel safe here?

Steady is the base layer of the deck — grounding, reassurance, capacity, trust, and ordinary dependability. Nothing dramatic happens on the navy cards. That is exactly the point: they build the floor everything else stands on.

The relational job

Before anything gets deep, something has to feel solid.

Most connection products start with vulnerability. Steady starts earlier — with the felt sense that this person, this room, this evening can hold whatever comes next.

Steady cards work on the unglamorous machinery of closeness: how you signal that you’re dependable, how reassurance is actually delivered (and actually received), how much capacity each of you honestly has today, and what trust looks like in units small enough to practice.

They deliberately stay at low intensity. You can hand a Steady card to a new partner, a guarded friend, or someone having a hard week, and nobody has to brace. When Steady is doing its job, the other three paths stop feeling like risks.

Why these topics — the psychology

A calm nervous system asks better questions.

Steady is built directly on the “secure base” idea at the heart of attachment research — explored further on the inspiration page.

The secure base

Attachment research describes closeness as a felt answer to one question: “Are you there for me?” Steady prompts let that question be asked — and answered — out loud, instead of tested through hints and silences.

Co-regulation before conversation

Two people calm each other before they understand each other. Grounding and capacity prompts lower the temperature first, which is why Steady sits at the start of a session rather than the end.

Predictability builds trust

Trust grows from small kept promises, not grand declarations. Steady cards keep asking for the next small, keepable one — dependability in units you can actually practice this week.

What a session feels like

Quiet. Slower than you expect. Surprisingly specific.

  1. Arrive

Phones down, one navy card face up. The first prompts are about right now — capacity, mood, what kind of evening this can honestly be.

  2. Trade small truths

Answers tend to be short and concrete: how you like to be reassured, what “being there” means in practice. No archaeology, no confessions.

  3. Leave with one thing

Most Steady sessions end with one small, specific agreement — a signal, a habit, a sentence to use next week. That’s a win. Stop while it still feels easy.

“Sit still and match the other person's breathing for six breaths without talking. Then say the first word that turns up.”

S-03 · Steady · six breaths, one word

S-04 · Steady · stand-in object
