Looking for a We’re Not Really Strangers alternative?

We’re Not Really Strangers is very good at the thing it was built for: taking two people who don’t know each other well and getting them somewhere real in one sitting. Meet Me Gently was built for a different problem — two people who already know each other, and who have a few subjects they keep steering around.

The short answer. If you want a game night that escalates — strangers, a new date, friends who want to go deeper fast — WNRS is the better buy, and it is the one we’d point you to.

If the difficult conversation is one you have already had three times, and the problem is not depth but safety, that is what Meet Me Gently is designed around: a printed exit on every card, and a Repair category that exists on its own instead of hiding inside the deep end of a general deck.

We’re Not Really StrangersMeet Me Gently
Cards150108 in the core deck
Structure Three sequential levels — Perception, Connection, Reflection — plus wildcards and a final card Four paths you choose between — Steady, Open, Reach, Repair — in any order, plus a sealed 18+ add-on
How you move through it Progressive: a minimum of 15 cards at a level before the next one opens Non-progressive: you pick the path the evening needs, and can stop there
Opting out of a card Not a printed mechanic. Third-party rule write-ups say skipping is fine; the publisher does not sell it as a feature Printed on the face of every card, in the same place, in the same words: PASS · PAUSE · SWAP · STOP
Built for Two to six players, including people meeting for the first time Mostly two people who already have history — couples, close friends, family
Repair after conflict Not a separate category Repair is one of the four paths, with its own cards
Available now Yes, widely — Amazon, Target, its own shop No. Sales open 1 October 2026; there is a free sampler in the meantime

Where We’re Not Really Strangers is the better choice

  • Groups. It plays with up to six people. Meet Me Gently is written for two, and thins out past three.
  • Strangers and new relationships. The escalating-levels design is genuinely well made for people with no shared history to draw on.
  • You can buy it today. Ours is not on sale until 1 October.
  • It is a known quantity. Years of players, a large community, expansion decks. We are new, and we have no customer reviews to show you yet.

The part most comparison pages leave out

We did not invent letting people skip a card.

It matters to us that this page is accurate, so: several decks in this category already let you opt out of a question. {THE AND} by The Skin Deep states that “pass” is always an acceptable answer. BETTER TOGETHER ships three control cards — Pass, Switch and Reverse. Anyone telling you that a consent rule is a brand-new idea is selling you something.

What we think is genuinely different is narrower, and easier to check:

Meet Me Gently is attachment-informed, not therapy, and not a diagnostic tool. It does not tell you your attachment style and it is not a substitute for professional help. The reading behind it is listed openly on our inspiration page. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to We’re Not Really Strangers.
