Why we chose it
It’s the most cited large-scale observational body of couples research in the field, and two of its core findings — bids and repair attempts — map almost one-to-one onto two of our four paths.

Longitudinal work with thousands of couples, famous for two findings this deck is built around: everyday bids for connection, and repair attempts — the make-or-break moves after conflict.

The Gottmans built one of the largest longitudinal observational research programs on couples, including “Love Lab” studies that could predict divorce with notable accuracy from short samples of interaction.
Since the 1970s, Drs. John and Julie Gottman have published findings — most accessibly summarized in The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work and in decades of peer-reviewed papers — that are widely cited across couples therapy, developed independently of (though sometimes discussed alongside) Emotionally Focused Therapy.
Two findings from this body of work sit at the foundation of this deck: the everyday “bids for connection” partners make on each other, and the specific “repair attempts” that determine whether an argument ends in reconnection or distance.

Reach operationalizes “bids for connection” — small, low-stakes invitations to turn toward each other. Repair operationalizes “repair attempts” — direct, sometimes playful ways back into connection after friction, before contempt or stonewalling can take hold.
Where “informed” ends
The Gottman Institute and Drs. John and Julie Gottman have not endorsed, reviewed, or been involved with Meet Me Gently in any way. Their research is cited here as inspiration and recommended reading, nothing more — if it calls to you, read their work directly; it goes far deeper than any card can.
Meet Me Gently is an educational conversation deck, not therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and no card can tell you whether a relationship is safe. See the full inspiration page for our complete reading list and honest boundaries.
