Mating in Captivity

Esther Perel, licensed marriage & family therapist

Love wants closeness. Desire wants distance. Perel’s case that the very safety that makes love durable can quietly flatten the erotic charge that made two people want each other in the first place — and what to do about it.

What the book is about

The tug-of-war between love and desire.

Mating in Captivity argues that love and desire aren’t the same appetite — and that domesticity, the safety long-term couples build, can quietly work against the eroticism that first drew them together.

Published in 2006 by Esther Perel, a licensed marriage and family therapist, the book draws on her clinical practice and cross-cultural observation to examine a tension she argues most long-term couples run into: love thrives on closeness, security, and predictability, while desire thrives on distance, mystery, and a sense of the partner as an “other” who isn’t fully known or possessed.

Rather than treating waning desire as a problem to be fixed with more communication, Perel treats eroticism as a quality of imagination and play that a couple can deliberately cultivate — separate from, though related to, how well they talk to each other.

Core ideas

What the book actually argues.

From shelf to table

Why we chose it, and how we used it.

Why we chose it

It’s one of the most widely respected, clinically grounded books on sustaining desire in committed relationships, and it treats eroticism as something a couple can actively design rather than something that either exists or doesn’t.

How we used it for the cards

Perel’s argument that desire needs mystery, distance, and imagination shapes the Spicy tier of After Dark — prompts built around anticipation, curiosity, and reintroducing a partner as someone not fully known, rather than jumping straight to explicit content.

Where “informed” ends

Cited as inspiration. Not affiliated. Not endorsed.

Esther Perel has not endorsed, reviewed, or been involved with Meet Me Gently in any way. Mating in Captivity is cited here as inspiration and recommended reading, nothing more — if it calls to you, read the book itself; it goes far deeper than any card can.

After Dark is an 18+ add-on for consenting adults, sold sealed and never alone. Meet Me Gently is an educational conversation deck, not therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and no card can tell you whether a relationship or an activity is safe for you.
