Why we chose it
It brought the body into a project that could otherwise stay purely cognitive, and its emphasis on small corrective moments matches how a card deck actually works — one small interaction at a time.

A somatic take on attachment repair: safety is something the body learns through corrective experiences — small, repeated moments of being met — not something the mind argues itself into.
What the book is about
The Power of Attachment argues that attachment security is felt in the nervous system, not just understood cognitively — and that it has to be felt before it can be trusted.
Published in 2019 by Dr. Diane Poole Heller, a somatic-psychology-trained trauma and attachment specialist, the book draws on somatic and trauma-informed approaches — including elements of Somatic Experiencing — to frame “earned secure attachment” as something built through repeated, small corrective experiences rather than insight alone.
Where much attachment writing stays cognitive — explaining a pattern so a reader can reason their way out of it — Poole Heller’s work insists the body has to catch up too, and that grounding is a prerequisite for productive emotional conversation, not an optional warm-up.

It’s why Steady opens with grounding and capacity questions before any prompt asks for real content, and why sessions are explicitly designed to end while they still feel good rather than running until momentum fades.
Where “informed” ends
Dr. Diane Poole Heller has not endorsed, reviewed, or been involved with Meet Me Gently in any way. The Power of Attachment is cited here as inspiration and recommended reading, nothing more — if it calls to you, read the book itself; it goes far deeper than any card can.
Meet Me Gently is an educational conversation deck, not therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and no card can tell you whether a relationship is safe. See the full inspiration page for our complete reading list and honest boundaries.
