The Ethical Slut

Janet W. Hardy & Dossie Easton — writers and educators on sexuality

One of the founding texts of modern consensual non-monogamy — a warm, deliberately non-judgemental case for the idea that love and honesty scale further than jealousy tells us they can.

What the book is about

A reclaimed word, turned into a practical philosophy.

The Ethical Slut is a foundational guide to consensual non-monogamy and open relationships, built around reclaiming a word usually thrown as an insult and turning it into something to be proud of: a person who embraces their own sexuality without shame.

Written by Janet W. Hardy and Dossie Easton and first published in 1997, with substantially revised second and third editions in 2009 and 2017, the book has become one of the most widely read references on ethical non-monogamy in print — cited by therapists, educators, and ordinary couples working out what “open” could mean for them specifically, rather than for people in general.

It isn’t a recruitment pamphlet for polyamory, and it doesn’t read like one. Plenty of monogamous readers get just as much from it, because underneath the specific subject of multiple partners sits a more general manual for naming agreements out loud instead of assuming a partner shares your unspoken expectations.

Core ideas

What the book actually argues.

From shelf to table

Why we chose it, and how we used it.

Why we chose it

It’s the single clearest articulation we found of agreements as an ongoing practice rather than a one-time conversation, and of jealousy as something to examine rather than something to obey. Both ideas apply well beyond open relationships, which is exactly why they turned up in more than one path of the deck.

How we used it for the cards

The book’s treatment of agreements — spoken clearly, revisited deliberately, never assumed to be permanent — shaped Open path prompts that ask partners to say out loud what they’ve actually agreed to, and After Dark prompts that treat jealousy as data to name and examine together rather than an accusation to defend against.

As with every card in the deck, these can be passed, paused, swapped, or stopped, no explanation required.

Where “informed” ends

Cited as inspiration. Not affiliated. Not endorsed.

Janet W. Hardy and Dossie Easton, and their publishers, have not endorsed, reviewed, or been involved with Meet Me Gently in any way. The book is cited here as inspiration and recommended reading only, nothing more.

Meet Me Gently is an educational conversation deck, not therapy, diagnosis, or treatment, and no card can tell you whether a relationship is safe for you. After Dark is an 18+ add-on for consenting adults, sold sealed and never alone, and every card in it — like every card in the deck — can be passed, paused, swapped, or stopped.
