The New Topping Book and The New Bottoming Book are two separate handbooks by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy — the same authors behind The Ethical Slut — written to be read together, which is exactly how we treat them here: one entry, two halves of the same practice.

First published in the late 1990s and substantially revised in 2001 and again in 2011, the two books cover a consensual power exchange from each side of it — one addressed to the partner giving direction in a scene, the other to the partner receiving it — in a tone that is practical and warm rather than sensational.

Read separately they’re useful; read as a pair, the point becomes obvious: neither role makes sense without the other, and both require the same underlying skills of communication and care.

What the books actually teach.

Topping and bottoming are skills and roles, not identities or measures of worth — and neither is passive. The bottom’s consent and communication actively steer the scene throughout, not just at the start.
The bottom holds real power through limits and the safeword, which reframes submission as something deliberately given rather than something taken. Control on the surface and power underneath are not the same thing.
Negotiation happens before arousal narrows judgement — covering desires, hard and soft limits, relevant health information, and exactly how to stop, discussed plainly and in advance rather than improvised in the moment.
Responsibility, attentiveness, and emotional care are the top’s actual job, not dominance theatre — and aftercare, the deliberate return to ordinary connection once a scene ends, is part of the practice for both people. The top can crash too, and that comedown is real.

Why we chose it

Of everything on this shelf, this pair is the most directly practical about the actual mechanics of a scene — negotiation, limits, signals, and the return afterward — without ever tipping into performance or spectacle. That structure translates cleanly into cards.

How we used it for the cards

The books’ negotiate-play-return structure shaped After Dark’s shape directly: a stop-signal card opens every explicit session, negotiation prompts come before anything explicit, and deliberate cool-down prompts close the tier out — because the return matters as much as the scene itself, for both partners.

As with every card in the deck, all of these can be passed, paused, swapped, or stopped, no explanation required.
